What to pack in your hospital bag
The most important formalities
- pregnancy card recording all the examinations from all ultrasounds
- insurance card and ID, plus a copy of the dad's ID card
- marriage certificate, in case of unmarried couples - confirmation of the baby's surname from the registry office
- name declaration for the child's name that has to be signed by both parents (can be filled in at the hospital)
- for first-time mums it may come in handy to take your personal anamnesis with you, which will particularly speed up the reception
- birth wishes
- money to pay for your partner supporting you during childbirth and extra or additional services if the maternity hospital offers those
For your companion
- slippers
- spare clothing to change into - check if they offer some extra at the maternity hospital
- snacks - in case the labour takes longer than planned
- respirator
Something to boost your energy
- grape sugar - helps during and after childbirth
- chocolate - to calm the nerves or as a bribe for the nurses
- raspberry leaf or lady's mantle tea - to support lactation and contraction of the uterus after birth
- freeze-dried fruit or fruit puree - a snack for when you're staying in your hospital room
- good quality bone broth, e.g. from Planet Paleo - not all hospitals offer an appropriate diet for new mums and this broth supports milk production. Alternatively, have some broth brought by visitors.
- Nutridrink - it's ridiculously sweet, but it can help you get back on your feet fast
- green supplements (barley and chlorella) - if you start taking them before birth, they'll provide energy after delivery, helping against constipation which might occur in the postpartum period.
Things you'll definitely need
- lip balm - during labour, lips tend to dry out a lot during childbirth, besides, a lip balm always comes in handy
- paper tissues - never leaving the house with kids anymore without having a pack of tissues at hand
- mesh panties - not particularly sexy, but we don't really care about that after delivery (you won't need to throw them away when you get home, they can be washed easily)
- postpartum pads - most maternity hospitals will give you one package, so taking one extra package with you should be enough, depending on the amount of pads in the package.
- nappies for the baby - you'll get a couple of diapers from the hospital for free, but after that you'll need to have your own, so either bring a pack of disposable ones for newborns (they have a cut-out for the belly button) or newborn cloth diapers (square cloths should be available there)
- rubber slippers - so that you can use them in the shower as well (for hygiene reasons and to prevent slipping)
- shampoo, soap, hairbrush, toothbrush and toothpaste (possibly also some dental floss and an interdental brush)
- a nursing bra - the breasts get very full after childbirth and the fabric of those hospital gowns can be a bit rough, so it's more for comfort
- nursing pads
- towels - some hospitals do provide them, some don't - so make sure to check this out beforehand so that you don't carry them for nothing
- some socks and a hat for the newborn - will come in handy during your six-week postpartum stay
- some warm socks - might be useful already in the delivery room, or later in your hospital room
- baby clothes for when you go home - your partner can bring them when picking you up
- phone charger
Things you won't need
- a night gown – will be available at the hospital
- newborn cosmetics products - ask which products they use at the hospital and bring your own if you want
- clothes for mum to wear when going home from the hospital - you can wear the ones you arrived in or someone can bring you other clothes
- a book, a magazine, headphones
- enema - Yal gel or Baxter solution - it's gentler, but from experience the classic enema with warm water is more effective, because it warms you up nicely and the birth goes smoother
- aromatherapy - for instance rose water or any kind of pregnancy blend
For a better overview it's nice to have two separate bags. One with things to take to the delivery room and one to take to your hospital room. Alternatively, you can bring a third bag with things for the baby and you for the day you go back home. This one can be brought by baby daddy when he comes to pick you up.
We wish you a beautiful childbirth and healthy babies.
