Natural biodiversity, crop rotation and compost fertilisation keep the soil healthy and full of nutrients. Instead of chemical products, weeding is prevented by simple weeding and hoeing, mulching, more efficient irrigation, and growing more plant species together.

Natural insecticides are used, and various practices (e.g. planting certain crops) are used to encourage natural enemies of pests. The flowers are often harvested by hand or in a more gentle way and without the use of chemicals to defoliate the plants.
