Monika and Her Story

Not that long ago, our mum was a perfectly healthy, gorgeous woman. Despite a very difficult childhood, she turned into an incredibly strong person. Simply the best mum I, Tereza, and my brother David could have asked for. A strong personality, she overcame all of life's obstacles that she had to face since her childhood. Her mother passed away when she was young, her grandmother died soon after, and she never knew her father. Not only to us but also to everyone around her, she was always someone who would give everything she had away even when she didn't have anywhere to give from. An open-hearted person with the ability to bring joy to everyone's lives.

On 30 December 2022, our lives were turned upside down when the phone rang, and we were informed that our mother had been involved in a very serious car accident with a truck that had sideswiped her at full speed, after which she had to be airlifted to the ICU in Hradec Králové. She was brought in in a very severe condition, with a broken pelvic bone, fractured collarbone, broken pairs of ribs, punctured lung, torn aorta and cerebral hemorrhage.

She was in a coma vigil for three months, after which she gradually came out of it thanks to hyperbaric oxygen therapy at the Regional Hospital Kladno. She fought every day, little by little, even though the doctors did not initially give us much hope and tried to prepare us for the worst.

She, however, made it through and didn't give up. She was now bedridden with extensive brain damage. Unfortunately, she was unmarried and unsecured.

She is now spending three more months lying in the private rehabilitation ward of the Geriatric and Rehabilitation Centre in Kladno, where the doctors are trying to get her body moving so that she can be handled more easily and can slowly get into a wheelchair. In Kladno, she began to communicate again with a whiteboard, writing and composing letters. She keeps asking when she can go home. She is slowly learning to use her vocal cords again and can quietly answer with singular words. We think she might learn to speak again. The road to a full recovery will be long and thorny, but our mum is resilient and keeps fighting every day to come back to us.

What's next?

In a few weeks, Monika's stay in Kladno will be over.

As she is unable to move around in a wheelchair, she will require a special vehicle, a reclining bed, a special mattress, a special wheelchair, expert care and professional help.

Before Monika can come home or to a specialized facility, we would like to arrange a stay at a neurorehabilitation centre that will allow her to communicate more easily with her family and improve her overall mobility and motor skills. This centre is located in Liberec. Afterwards, we would like to arrange stem cell therapy for Monika.

After nine endless months of obstacles, grief and struggling, we are moving closer every day to the prospect of Monika coming back to us. The irony is that all her life she has prided herself on her independence and self-sufficiency, but right now she needs all the help she can get!

What will the proceeds from this fundraiser be used for?

The money collected will be used primarily for Monika's treatment, rehabilitation and all related costs.

Our specific goals will depend on the outcome of the fundraiser. We intend to set aside around 1.5 million CZK for speech therapy, rehabilitation, neurorehabilitation and stem cell treatment, which unfortunately is not practiced in the Czech Republic and is therefore not covered by insurance.  We will also use the contributions for the most up-to-date treatment possible in a private neurorehabilitationcentre in Liberec, which is also not covered by insurance. The cost of four weeks' accomodation for Monika and Tereza with transport and meals is about 100.000 CZK. If more money is raised, we would like to use it for specialized brain damage treatment abroad (possibly in Switzerland or Mexico).

Furthermore, one of our goals is to ensure Monika's mobility, transportation to the hospital and home, and most importantly, a return to normal life. We wish to use the donations to buy a wheelchair-modified Volkswagen Caddy worth 780.000 CZK, including a special built-in. Thanks to the state contribution ranging from 100.000 to 500.000 CZK, we intend to set aside 400.000 CZK of the money raised to buy the vehicle.

Finally, with the hope of Monika returning home to her children, three cats and a dog, we want to help her with the purchase of medical aids, including a reclining bed, an anti-decubitus mattress, a special wheelchair, as well as with the cost of various home adjustments to make things easier. We estimate the medical aids and home adjustments to cost about 700.000 CZK, and additional 300.000 CZK are required to provide for the children who are still in school.

If we are able to meet all of these goals, any additional funds will be used to pay off the mortgage and loans that Monika and her children cannot afford to pay in this situation, and to care for Monika's pets Harvey, Daisy, Mia, Karel and Greg.

This entire situation has changed not just Monika's life, but especially the lives of Tereza and David, who cannot imagine a future without their mum.

We would like to express our deep gratitude on behalf of the whole family and all friends for every single kind soul who can help us give Monika her life back and, first and foremost, to give her beloved children their mum back, as we all miss her very much.
